With our bags checked and having passed through security at Gimhae Airport, I felt a sigh of relief as we sat in the chairs waiting for our flight to take off. This was my first trip to Japan, and I don’t think the waves of excitement hit until that moment. It was at that moment when all the frenzy of handling the logistics of the trip finally gave way to the destination itself. I was really going!
Soon, I would eat Japanese food in Japan, meet up with a dear friend, and see all the sights my friends who’ve visited there over the past few years raved about. The whole trip came about rather suddenly, and I was so grateful at how cheap the flight ended up being (a little less than $300 round trip).
Traveling to Japan and exploring Asia from South Korea as a U.S. citizen is relatively easy, given the privilege of having a U.S. passport and citizenship. With minimal visa restrictions, many of my friends who call South Korea home can also go for quick weekend trips or 2-3 month holidays around Asia.
While you still 100% need to do your homework about the countries you are traveling to, I pulled together this quick guide to help you plan your trip to Korea’s top 5 travel destinations in Asia. You’ll also find plenty of information on which Korean airport and airline to choose from. I hope you use it as a jumping off point in your research. May you have a wonderful time wherever you land!
From Korea to Japan
Korean’s Must-Visit Destinations and Activities
With its close proximity to Korea, Japan is an ideal destination for a weekend couple, group or solo trip. Over the past few years, Koreans have made up the largest number of tourists visiting Japan, with the most popular cities being Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Fukuoka. In these cities, the main attractions for Koreans include eating Japanese food, shopping, sightseeing, and visiting hot springs.
Best Travel Times
The best times to travel to Japan are in the spring and fall months. Similar to the weather in Korea, between March to May, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms and mild weather before the hot and rainy season kicks in. Then, again in the fall, between roughly September to November, Japan’s temperatures cool down and become more pleasant, which makes taking in the beautiful autumn foliage more comfortable and spectacular.
Flight Information
How long is the flight?
Depending on where you are coming from (e.g., leaving from Seoul or Busan), the total trip time is 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
What is the average cost for a round-trip ticket?
It costs approximately ₩200,000 to ₩400,000 KRW ($150 to $300 USD). I recommend checking out Skyscanner to search for cheap flight options.
When is the best time to book?
While I have booked almost a month out on a great deal, it’s best to book at least 2-3 months in advance to secure the best prices.
Important Things to Know Before You Go
Entry Requirements
At the moment, all you need to enter Japan as a U.S. citizen is a passport valid for the entire time you are staying in Japan, and an onward or return ticket for tourist or business. Japan lets U.S. citizens stay “visa free” for up to 90 days.
For more detailed information, refer to the U.S. State Department and other official travel resources.
International Driving Permit (IDP) and General Transportation
It can be a little stressful to know which train ticket and subway pass you need since Japan’s transportation system is owned by many companies. I strongly recommend doing your research, depending on where you enter in Japan and which cities you plan to visit. For some passes and tickets, you can pre-purchase and pick them up at select airports.
Also! Very important, but if you plan on driving in Japan, you will need an IDP issued in the United States by the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). You will need to obtain this before arrival, or bring your American license translated into Japan by companies like Driving Japan.
For more information, visit this website for a complete driving in Japan guide.
Cash is King
When traveling in Japan, it’s important to bring cash with you or take it out from ATMs around the country. Many places still only accept cash, especially in less touristy areas. Also important to note is that much of Japan’s currency is coins, so bring a change purse or Japanese coin holder.
