I attended Green Korean language school in June and had a fantastic experience. Their teaching method was well-structured, starting with the alphabet and progressing to reading, introductions, simple questions, and counting. Having a test every two weeks ensured consistent learning and progress. One aspect I particularly appreciated was the minimal use of English during classes, which made the experience more immersive.
The program I attended started the first of every month with classes held for three hours per day for four weeks. The school was conveniently located in Myeongdong and even offered a dormitory where students could stay while they took classes. There are many classrooms and a fantastic cafe where people can grab meals or coffee.
In terms of effectiveness, I can happily say that by the end of the program, I was able to confidently order in Korean, ask simple questions, and count in both directions. The fun level was off the charts with a rating of 10/10! The teacher was incredibly patient, and we even had the opportunity to visit a Kimchi museum. At the museum, we learned about different types of kimchi and even made our own napa cabbage kimchi to take home.
The classes are for people aged 14 to 80 and there are 13 different levels that are determined by a placement test. People can choose from morning classes, evening classes, and even Saturday classes. There are also private classes available that are even more flexible.
There are many similar hagwons or schools in Korea that teach post-college learners like me. Green Korean Language School delivered an excellent learning experience while keeping it enjoyable and engaging. The cost was $490,000 won ($370 based on today’s exchange rate) for my four-week program, which I felt was money very well spent.
Tips for Future Students of a Korean Language School:
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
- Take lots of notes.
- Practice speaking/reading while you go sightseeing in Korea!
As a final note, even if you are not able to attend a Korean language school in person, you can take classes online. I would consider continuing my learning online through a program like Green because the in-person experience was so great! However, I do think learning in-person is more effective than learning online because it’s more immersive and there are fewer distractions.
