In the brutal world of stand-up comedy, few Korean Americans have displayed the exceptional ability to captivate audiences quite like Michael Yo. The two-time Emmy nominee is currently on a nationwide tour with his show, “Do I Lie?”, where he proudly embraces his Korean heritage and infuses it into his comedy to create a powerful blend of cultural appreciation and laughter.
Born to a Korean mother and Black father, Michael Yo self-identifies as “Blasian,” and is married to a Caucasian woman from Wyoming. This vibrant cultural tapestry has significantly shaped his life and comedic style. The self-proclaimed “Half-Black Brother with a Korean Mother,” was born and raised in Houston and got his radio start in Austin at the popular central-Texas station, 96.7. More recently you may have seen him as a host and reporter on E!, on “Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami”, and as a celebrity correspondent on CNN, FOX and MSNBC. He also hosts the “Yo Show” podcast.
Growing up in a multicultural environment, Yo experienced the best of both worlds, fusing the values and traditions of his Korean background with the diversity of American society. This fusion of influences became the foundation of Michael’s comedy, allowing him to draw upon a diverse array of experiences and observations to craft relatable and hilarious performances that resonate with audiences of all backgrounds. In fact, the name of his current tour, “Do I Lie?”, is a quote from his Korean mother who is the source of much of his material and has become a fan favorite on the “Yo Show.”
Through his performances, Michael Yo has utilized the power of laughter to celebrate diversity and promote inclusivity. As he continues to take the comedy world by storm, Michael Yo has also used his platform to shed light on the significance of embracing one’s heritage and culture. Proudly representing his Korean roots, he has become an advocate for cultural understanding, using humor to bridge the gap between diverse communities and foster unity.
