IU, the reigning queen of K-pop, is gearing up for her 18-city “HER World Tour” following the drop of her latest extended play, The Winning. IU, also known by her real name of Lee Ji-eun, made her debut in 2008 and has achieved remarkable success with a series of hits, boasting 31 No. 1 singles in South Korea. Among her chart-topping tracks are “Eight,” “Blueming,” and “Good Day.”
The Winning marks her comeback to the K-pop scene after a three-year hiatus, making it one of her most anticipated drops. On January 17 at midnight KST, IU officially announced the dates and cities for her upcoming “HER World Tour”, and enthusiastic fans worldwide have already begun securing their tickets. Many venues have now sold out but dedicated fans are certainly still looking around on secondary markets, especially for her summer dates in the US.
Despite her immense fame in Korea, globally, some are still unfamiliar with her inspiring rise. Shortly after her elementary days, when she discovered her talent and passion for singing and performing, her family fell into poverty, causing her relatives to scatter. IU would have to live with her grandmother alongside her cousins and siblings. She experienced rough living conditions, living in a small, cold room that she remembers being infested with cockroaches.
IU would continue to develop her passion for singing, but she ran into more hardships after failing several agency auditions, and even being scammed by a fake one that stole her money after promising training.
IU released her first EP, “Lost and Found” in 2008, which also could have been the last, due to its poor performance.
However, she would finally make a great breakthrough with her first full length album, Growing Up in 2009, then Nagging in 2010 topped the domestic charts. But her biggest break was her album, Real, which launched her into becoming one of the biggest artists in Korea.
From there, commercial failure was a thing of the past for IU, as she dropped hit after hit in whatever genre she wanted. You and I, Modern Times, Chat-Shire, Palette, and Lilac are all very different albums with different genres and styles, yet IU always seems to absolutely nail it. And that doesn’t even cover her meteoric rise as a top actress in such Korean mega hits such as “My Mister” and “Broker”.
Set to commence on March 2, 2024 in Seoul, South Korea, her first four concerts will begin in Seoul’s famous KSPO Dome and then move to various cities across Asia, Europe, and the United States. It will be her first-ever tour with stops in the United States and Europe, including cities such as: Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Newark, London, and Berlin. Fans looking to buy tickets for IU’s concerts are able to check availability with the nearest stadium or arena.
